Hope for Family Seasonal Gatherings

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.  - 1 John 1:5-7

Tis the season to celebrate – life, family, and the birth of Christ. Unfortunately, family gatherings, during the holidays, do not always end in fellowship. It is painful to ponder, but some family gatherings bring stress, tension, fighting, bitter attitudes, and the list goes on. Suddenly, everything about the season is stripped away and sabotaged by an issue. (Something the enemy loves to do)

I love what John wrote. “God is light” – not darkness and “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.”

Sadly, some family members are inclined to blow out our candles, leaving us to traipse through the season like a black cloud of doom. Well, here’s the secret for success. John had it right when he said, “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light” we will have fellowship. Our candles get blown out every day. How much light can we personally produce? Our light is just a sputter, but if we walk beneath the shelter of God’s wings – beneath His light – well – that’s a light brighter than anything we could ever generate. It is glorious and brilliant beyond our imagination or understanding. He lights the dark paths. His light shoves out the darkness. In Him there is no darkness.

This season, in all things, make it a point to find the light and rest beneath it. And if you accidentally stray and find yourself in darkness – the light is never far away. Find the light and you will find fellowship.
